Karah Brown
Hi! My name is Karah Brown, and I am going into my last semester at Saginaw Valley State University. I will have an undergraduate degree in accounting and Spanish, and I plan to sit for the CPA exams soon.
I learned about C&M through Handshake and applied and accepted the offer knowing little about the firm. I started this summer with low expectations: I had just finished up a different internship with a state office that I enjoyed a lot, and I was planning on this internship confirming my dislike of public accounting and then happily going back to government after graduation. But C&M has far exceeded my expectations right from the start and it’s not going to be as easy to pick a career path as I thought it would.
I spent the summer interning in the Advisory and Assurance department. I worked closely with three other interns and a rotation of managers/partners out of one of the conference rooms where we had a handful of second monitors set up. We were supposed to be working on 401k audits but also got the opportunity to get a look at some other types of engagements as well as some admin projects.
Something that I didn’t expect that really made the experience was some of the extra projects that were designed for all the summer interns to work on together. We had a data analytics project in which teams worked in competition to make valuable firm insights out of some internally gathered data. I think I learned a lot about data analytics and also walked away with a certificate. We also worked on improving the firm’s recruitment process and were enrolled in the Detroit Intern Experience. Overall, I had a great 11 weeks with C&M, and I am grateful for all the people I’ve met and experiences I had!
